As ever, Burton Hathow’s musicians have been busy this term. We pride ourselves on being a singing school, with all our children involved at every level, and a favourite event in the calendar is our closely contested House Singing Competition which takes place just before half term. This year we welcomed Mr Duckels from Lincolnshire Music Services as our guest adjudicator and were treated to enthusiastic performances from all four houses. The winning performance was a rousing version of “The Drunken Sailor” from Oak House.
In the Half Term Concert, Upper School Orchestra opened proceedings with their version of “Every Breath You Take” by Sting. Oak House reprised their winning performance, as did all four soloists, Lucy Thompson, Connie Crust, Bea Magee and Bethany Pitfield. We also heard from two of our Year 6 drummers, Charlie Clark-Clements and Hector Mathews, contributing to the noisier end of the spectrum! Upper School Choir closed the concert with a dry run of one of their Music Festival entries, “Fighting For Freedom”.
When the Music Festival duly arrived in March, we were there competing against 5 other schools in a very strong field. Although not winners, our singers acquitted themselves extremely well, gaining some very encouraging and positive feedback from the adjudicator who this year was a choral specialist. Our instrumentalists were ably represented by Zack MacDonnel on Cello, who came away placed in both of his classes. Hopefully next year we will field a few more entries for this great celebration of music making in Lincoln. As always, if anyone is interested in starting to learn an instrument, do collar me for a chat!
