A happy child is one who thrives. A safe child is one who takes reasonable risks. A child who feels valued will value themselves.

We have a robust Personal, Social, Health, and Economic (PSHE) curriculum which incorporates Relationships and Health Education. The curriculum focuses on the development of the knowledge, skills, and attributes needed to keep children safe and prepare them for life after school. In addition to this, we have a designated Mental Health Lead, whose sole focus is the psychological well-being of each and every one of our students.

RSE Statement of Intent

Burton Hathow Preparatory School aims to provide relevant and responsible relationships and sex education to all of its pupils. The objectives form part of the school’s personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) curriculum and are taught both discreetly, in timetabled lessons, and throughout the school’s general curriculum and pastoral care. Our staff are aware of the importance of promoting healthy relationships and the values that underpin the RSE objectives outlined by the government.

Communication and transparency with parents is key when it comes to the teaching of RSE and we assure that the curriculum delivered is appropriate to the age and development of the pupils. We aim to broaden the knowledge and understanding of the children in relation to healthy relationships and personal development, with some aspects of sex education being introduced in the latter years. We do this in a way that allows the children to explore elements of RSE in a safe environment and we do not promote any particular form of sexual orientation. We aim to develop foundations from which our pupils can grow as they move on from Burton Hathow into different relationships and communities.

The RSE policy is available in the policies section of this website and is updated on an annual basis.

Policy Aims

At Burton Hathow we promote lifelong learning across the curriculum and note the particular importance in relation to RSE. The guidelines and subsequent implementation supports physical, moral and emotional development and teaches about healthy relationships, and aspects of sexual relationships, in a way that is age appropriate and accessible to all learners. This includes the value of positive self-esteem, making choices and judgements within relationships, knowledge of how the body works, grows and changes, whilst exploring an array of moral issues and personal values.

We want our pupils to live healthily and safely within their chosen communities as they move forward towards adulthood and we want to give them the understanding of how to respect themselves and their bodies, how to have positive and healthy relationships of numerous natures and how and where to seek support and help should they need it.

Curriculum Aims

Burton Hathow’s PSHE/RSE curriculum aims to provide an ongoing programme of development that begins in Nursery and continues through to Year 6.

The outcomes include our pupils developing the knowledge and skills to:

  • Develop positive values and a moral framework that will guide pupils’ decisions, judgements and behaviour as they move into adolescence and adulthood
  • Understand the consequences of their actions and behave responsibly within all relationships
  • Have the confidence and self-esteem to value themselves and others and to have respect for individual conscience and the skills to judge what kind of relationships they want
  • Communicate effectively
  • Avoid being exploited or exploiting others
  • Avoid being pressurised into behaviours or situations they do not feel comfortable with
  • Have an appropriate understanding of the processes of puberty, conception and birth
  • Show respect for their own bodies and other people’s
  • Recognise their emotions and express them effectively and appropriately
  • Understand the importance of family life for all and, in particular in the development of a child,
  • Recognise and respect that different people make different decisions about the relationships they choose to enter in to.
