As the first half term of 2025 draws to a close, I’ve had time to reflect on the past six weeks. The pupils at Burton Hathow have shown tremendous competence, pride, and passion in all their endeavors. The school community they’ve helped create enables them to thrive.

A clear example of this was seen in our half term concert on the final day of school. As always, Mr and Mrs Nowell led the children in this inspiring event, where they did a remarkable job showcasing their talents in front of a packed audience. Over the last few weeks, I’ve been impressed by the dedication of the children in their choir and orchestra sessions as they prepared for this performance. I was also blown away by our vocal and instrumental soloists, who truly wowed the crowd. I can’t wait to see their continued progress at our next half term concert in May.

This event was preceded by the highly anticipated house singing competition, where we were fortunate to have a guest judge, Mark Wilde. An accomplished opera singer and Director of Music at Grimsby Minster, he provided expert feedback on the musical performances from each house and our four house soloists. After much deliberation, Elm emerged as the winners with their rendition of ‘I’m Still Standing’ by Elton John.

We also had a fantastic turnout for the Lower School’s ‘Wonderful Weather’ event. The children love sharing their learning experiences with their families. During the event, staff prepared engaging activities tied to the topic, including filming a weather report, creating rainbows in water, and making a tornado in a jar. It was wonderful to see the children explain their learning to their parents, taking inspiration from these activities to bring the learning home.

In keeping with our weather theme, the children in year 4 have been creating their own water cycles and year 5 have been conducting investigations to learn about how the seasons occur.

In what truly was a jam-packed week, we also took part in our annual birdwatch. Mr Hardcastle and Mr Daly returned to share their expertise and passion for local wildlife, leading groups of children to explore the natural world around them. Despite the drizzly weather, the children’s spirits were high, and many commented that this was a highlight for them. It’s so important to extend learning beyond the classroom, and we’re fortunate to have the space in our school grounds to provide these experiences.

Thank you all for engaging so positively with parents’ evening. We understand the importance of staying connected with teachers throughout the year, and we’re pleased to have trialed a new system for Upper School parents’ evening, which was largely successful. Thanks to those who took the time to provide feedback.

The Valentine’s Disco was a fantastic way to round off the term. With great music, food, and dance moves, the children had a wonderful time. A big thank you to the Owl volunteers and staff who gave up their time to help organise the event. The funds raised directly support the children’s learning and experiences within the school.

On a final personal note, I want to express my heartfelt thanks to the children, parents, and staff for welcoming me so warmly into your school community. I’m excited to continue working together to build on and develop the children’s educational journey at this wonderful school. The possibilities ahead are endless!
