As we step into Spring, Burton Hathow has been bustling with exciting learning opportunities and experiences for children across the school.

We begin with the important work being carried out by our Forest School enrichment group, who have been designing and building paths in the forest to make it more accessible for all. The children gain a real sense of responsibility as they become stewards of the forest.

Year 1 and 2 embarked on a scavenger hunt around the school to spot plants and animals in the local environment and explored the different habitats they live in. They observed many birds and even used recorded bird sounds to call them over!

In Reception, children welcomed their secret reader into school on a sunny afternoon – an event they enjoy weekly. A parent or guardian surprises them with one of their favourite stories, and the children love the anticipation of discovering who it might be and what story will be shared.

Additionally, as part of their “Ready, Steady, Grow!” topic, Reception pupils planted sweet peas and sunflower seeds, discussing what they need to grow and thrive. Watching their progress in the coming weeks will be exciting!

In Art, Year 4 demonstrated a wide range of skills. These include measuring, folding, cutting, gluing, painting, and knotting, enabling them to design and create fantastic marionette puppets. We are incredibly proud of their work, which is now beautifully displayed in the school office.

Year 4 also interviewed Mrs Gayle to discuss where our food comes from at Burton Hathow and emphasised the importance of shopping locally to reduce our “food miles.” In science, they explored how sound travels through vibrations using instruments. Meanwhile, Year 6 worked on creating circuits, making predictions about which would function correctly.

The BH engineers have been busy constructing their prototype clay ovens, designed to tackle the issue of smoke inhalation caused by poor ventilation in many living spaces worldwide.

As we spot the early signs of Spring, children across the school have been creating wonderful artwork inspired by the first flowers of the year – snowdrops and daffodils. Using a range of mediums, their creativity has brightened the school beautifully.

Our week concluded on a high note as the Upper School choir participated in a showcase of singing across Lincoln. Held at St Peter and St Paul’s Church, they delighted the audience with stunning performances of “California Dreamin’” by The Mamas and the Papas, and “Africa” by Toto.
